Wisconsin Hunting Accidents: Who’s Liable When Safety Rules Are Ignored?

Hey, an accident in the woods can still end up in court. We’ve had a lot of these cases where somebody did not see their target and beyond, if they’re deer hunting or Turkey hunting, or bear hunting or what have you, and you’re in the woods, you shoot at an animal, but on the other side of the animal is your hunting partner.

The shot, the bullet is you’re gonna go. Past that animal. And potentially if it hits your hunting partner, you are negligent because you didn’t abide by that basic rule of all hunters know your target and beyond. That’s negligence. We’ve had cases, just horrific injuries, really sad situations where we’ve helped people who were, injured, because somebody else didn’t follow that basic rule and ended up shooting them.

The most recent one, one I can think of is they got shot in the leg, with some Turkey shot because. Two Turkey hunters, didn’t abide by that rule. The person who was shooting didn’t know what was beyond the target because what was beyond the target was his buddy. Not good stuff. So when you’re hunting, please be extra careful.

Make sure that you’re aware who’s else is in your party. If you’re on public land, make sure you’re aware of who else is possibly out there hunting, and just stay safe. Know your target and beyond.
