Mural of Peace Milwaukee – Iconic I-43 Mural You Can’t Miss

If you’ve ever driven north on I‑43, you’ve seen it — the Mural of Peace Milwaukee commuters recognize instantly. Large, colorful, and painted on the side of a building, it’s one of the most recognizable public artworks in the city.

This stunning mural, known as the Mural of Peace, was completed in 1994 by Milwaukee artist Reynaldo Hernandez. It features powerful imagery of unity and hope and has become a lasting symbol on the city’s South Side. Anyone driving northbound on the highway passes it — often without knowing its name or story.

In 2025, the mural received a local public art award, recognizing its long-standing impact and cultural value. It continues to stand tall at 611 W. National Avenue, welcoming drivers and standing as a visual reminder of Milwaukee’s vibrant art scene.
