How Long Does It Take to Become a Lawyer?

Posted on

How many years does it take to be a lawyer? Well, it takes three years. In Wisconsin, if you graduate from Marquette University Law School, for example, like I did, once you graduate, you can be admitted to the bar, and then you’re a lawyer. You can practice in all the courts in Wisconsin. I think Marquette University Law School is a great law school, and because they do such a good job of teaching us, then we are prepared and we are ready to practice law in Wisconsin.

So it’s a three year process. Sometimes you can go to night school or you can do the part time program and then it’s longer. And sometimes you can even graduate earlier, I had classmates of mine who graduated in two and a half years from law school. That’s possible. Not as likely because it really isn’t, you know, a lot more intensive, but typically it takes three years from the beginning until the end of law school.
